Welcome to Joyful Ceremonies

I’m Jenny and it is my pleasure to welcome you to this website where you can get an idea of my services.

A note on Marriage Equality:
It has always been my utmost wish that all couples in love could be given the opportunity to be legally recognised in Australia. I’ve always believed our time would come, and that’s why I’ve been a celebrant for so many years. I believe in love and the celebrations and milestones that come along with it. So if you’re having a look at this website and hoping to marry the person you love in 2018 and beyond, and you’re in a relationship that is lesbian, gay, or any other non-binary part of the human race, I would absolutely love to work with you. I have your back and I want to stand beside you as you legally marry the person you love.

It was a difficult year for GLBTIQ people in 2017. The postal survey, the upper house, and finally the lower house discussing, debating, arguing, but finally we achieved the positive result that marriage equality is now law in Australia.

I am over the moon. This means the world to me personally and I can't wait to celebrate with you all.

Thank you for reading. On with the general intro!

Castlemaine civil marriage celebrant Jenny O'Keefe of Joyful Ceremonies shares a bit of info about what she does. Thanks to Lee Sandwith of Trio Agency in Kyneton for making this video, and to all the beautiful couples who starred in it too!

Joyful Ceremonies
When big things happen in life, it’s a good idea to get together with our nearest and dearest to have a shindig. It gives us a chance to pause briefly and consider what this change means, not just for the individuals marrying or making a commitment, but also for friends and family. Celebrating milestones, change and achievements gives us all the opportunity to take stock of what is meaningful, and how we value one another.

My role as a celebrant is to assist you in creating a ceremony that will truly reflect your individual taste and style. You can show your love, respect, joy and celebration in a variety of ways that will result in a satisfying and authentic occasion for you and the special people in your life.

Having a celebrant on board means you can do it your way. It doesn’t matter whether you have no idea where to start or a wealth of plans - the flexibility of celebrancy lends itself beautifully to shaping the ceremony around your core values and the ideals you’d like to highlight on your day.

My jam is warm, inclusive, fun and relaxing occasions that you will always remember fondly.

Celebrants are appointed by the Attorney-General's department, and the Codes of practice for the profession can be seen online here.

Hello! Some things about me: I’m a professional communicator and celebrator who spends my time conducting ceremonies as a civil celebrant, MCing receptions and generally just hanging out around Castlemaine enjoying myself. I have a flair for the details in event management and a background in youth work, Auslan interpreting and community radio.

Back in the 2000’s when I was based in Melbourne, I spent many years broadcasting and teaching at Joy 94.9 and PBS FM. I’m a lover of animals, gardening, bushwalking, podcasts, craft of all kinds (except scrapbooking) and cooking. My wife Tracey and I have a very energetic toddler and a super cute baby who would be happy to usher you inside with a high five or some jumping around general drooling. If you come visit me I’ll probably make a batch of scones and a pot of tea to welcome you. Or a cheese platter or similar.

Becoming a celebrant was a dream come true, and I’m thrilled to regularly facilitate love festivals for people from all walks of life. I’ve got your back, and I know that the details taken care of behind the scenes will create a seamlessly beautiful experience for couples on the day. If you’re looking for a relaxed and inclusive ceremony with just the right amounts of laughter and tears, I reckon I’m your person.

I see you and I would love to facilitate and represent what you stand for.

Testimonials

"Jenny, thank you so much for helping to make our wedding day so special. We feel so grateful to have found you - even if it was on You Tube. Your speech that day on Spring St was so powerful and beautiful.....we knew immediately that you were the one. And then, to find that you lived in Castlemaine, that you knew Sam the hair legend, that you are a PBS chick - just everything worked out perfectly. It was a pleasure and an honour to have you as our celebrant. Thank you "-  Caroline & Laurie xxx

Just wanted to say a big thank you again for everything you did for us. We felt so supported and guided by you, not just on our wedding day but from the minute we met you. And I can't tell how many people came up and told us how amazing and fabulous our celebrant was! Our ceremony was exactly as we had imagined!
- Jenni and Toby

"Jenny made our ceremony everything we could have hoped for, and more. Her warmth, humour and professionalism is incredible. She has the ability to make everyone feel welcomed and part of the experience. The feedback from our family and friends about Jenny and the format of the ceremony has been overwhelmingly positive!" - Petro and Nick

Weddings

I’ll arrange all the paperwork required by the government to cement your marriage in the eyes of the law, one step at a time. When you think about it, the wedding ceremony is the part of the day when you are the most still with your partner.

Elopements

Do you just want to get it done, without the stress of event management? I have conducted some exquisite elopements that have been incredibly meaningful, intimate and fun. Also it just feels a bit cheeky, which I’m a big fan of.

Commitment Ceremonies

On Thursday the 7th of December 2017, the momentous news was announced that marriage equality is now law in Australia! Same sex couples are at long last treated equally. In the meantime, anyone can have a commitment ceremony!

Naming Celebrations

The arrival of a new family member heralds significant and limitless change and impact on parents, guardians and close community members. A naming ceremony is a beautiful opportunity to gather and officially give a child a name, welcoming them whilst gathering in celebration and love.

My wifey and I had a hot date last night! Great to get amongst it (leaving the house at night! Getting a babysitter! Driving to Melbs and back!) seeing Selina Jenkins’ excellent Midsumma Festival show Boobs. It’s on for a few more nights and is funny and beautiful and generous and kind and honest, like Sel herself. We had lots of fun eating a massive amount of yums from the sushi train at @chocolate_buddha and rolled home happy and loved up.

Choc honeycomb belongs on a fruit platter imho 😎 💅🏼
Taking a break post ceremony before warming up for the D floor at #tyingthenolt - pics of the couple coming soon but keeping the dazzling beauties on the DL for now 😎
I didn’t think my day could get better, but then I met this doggo down the shops 🐶 💗
Congrats Magnus and Tim - marrying at the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens this morning with a legals only ceremony ahead of their celebration with family and friends tomoz at @castlemainetaproom
We had a beautiful gang of about ten folks to witness these two legends get officially hitched and it was pretty rad.

One of the best parts other than meeting Tim and Magnus was that the ceremony was a wedding gift from their dear friend Rachel who then gave my wife and I a bunch of free haircuts.

Trade economy ✅
Fun and casual ✅
Sweet wedding gift sorted ✅
Done exactly the way the couple wanted ✅
Good feelings ✅
Pride in an ethical and joyous work sitch that makes things good for good folks ✅ 😍💕😭🌳🌞
A bit of romance up in herrrrre! Campbell and Steph are getting married on Friday so we did a rehearsal at the boathouse today. Super dooper fun and so many cute doggos.

Also pictured is the oval where I first met my wife, ten years ago. We talked on an old persons version of a dating app called Pink Sofa and decided to walk our four dogs along the yarra. Hilarity and true love ensued 🥰

Pretty excited about this wedding next week - it’ll be quite the shindig with these two leading the way. I really do get to work with the best hearted people.

Ok I’m getting a bit emosh now bye bye 👋🏼
Guys! I haven’t posted yet about my final ceremony for 2019. Just under the wire on NYE these two beauties tied the knot at the stunning Red Hill Estate down on the Ninch. A massive crew of family and friends were there to celebrate them and it was a quite a hootenanny!
Mel and Keane are very spesh to me - not just cos I married into Mel’s fam and we’ve been cousins for five and a bit years, but because they’re dear hearted people who love animals and fun and excellent food and excellent wine and basically light up the planet with their presence.
Thank you for having me along for the ride you beauties - and please enjoy photographic evidence of why I’m a celebrant and not a photographer (selfie) and how beautiful my wife is, as well as generously giving me a hand with sound on the day.
Congratulations Mel and Keane!!!!! #familywedding #happynewyear #luckylast2019 #morningtonpeninsulawedding #redhillwedding #beautifulbride #gorgeousgroom
Very serious. Very formal. No fun at all.

It’s opposites today! Had such a blast with these two and the fams. Currently enjoying street food and icy cold beers in Vietnam - loved up as all get out.
Onya Ry and Bee - I love your love and I love you both and I’m over the moon we got to celebrate you with such a top notch crew at the Coburg bowlo.
